A university tradition and a new faculty

The Faculty of Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems was established in response to the rapid development of computer science, artificial intelligence and autonomous technologies. The new structure builds on the academic tradition and experience of Politehnica University of Timisoara in computer science, mechatronics and robotics, creating a modern framework for education, research and innovation.

A short history

  1. 1920

    The Politehnica School of Timisoara

    The Politehnica School of Timisoara is founded. In the same year, teaching in Machine Elements and Mechanisms is organised within the Faculty of Electromechanics.

  2. 1948

    The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

    The teaching staff in Machine Elements and Mechanisms move to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

  3. 1964

    Computer Engineering

    Teaching begins in the Computer Engineering specialisation, within the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. The first student group in Electronic Computers is formed, splitting off from Electromechanics.

  4. 1974

    Automatic Control

    The Automatic Control specialisation is established alongside Computer Engineering.

  5. 1977

    Precision Mechanics

    The Precision Mechanics specialisation is established.

  6. 1981

    Computers and Automatic Control

    The Department of Computers and Automatic Control is established.

  7. 1990

    The Faculty of Computers and Automatic Control

    The Faculty of Computers and Automatic Control is established. In 1991, following a national alignment, its name is changed to the Faculty of Automation and Computers.

  8. 1990

    Industrial Robots

    The Industrial Robots specialisation is established.

  9. 1992

    Industrial Robots expands

    The Industrial Robots specialisation develops along two tracks, taught in Romanian and in German.

  10. 1996

    Mechatronics

    The Mechatronics specialisation is established.

  11. 1997

    Applied Informatics

    Within the Faculty of Automation and Computers, college-level university training begins in Applied Informatics and Computing Technology.

  12. 2006

    Informatics

    The Informatics bachelor's programme is introduced, with an on-campus and a distance-learning track.

  13. 2009

    Master's programmes

    New master's programmes are introduced, among them Information Systems for Production and Services, Information Systems in Healthcare and Information Technologies.

  14. 2011

    The Informatics field

    Informatics is introduced as a field of study, with bachelor's and master's degrees.

  15. 2026

    The Faculty of Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems

    The Faculty of Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems is established.

The words spoken by King Ferdinand I at the opening of the first building of the Politehnica in Timisoara, in 1923. They became the university's motto.
